Necklift

It is common for the skin around the neck to lose its elasticity and begin to sag, creating “jowls” from the area just under the jawline down the neck. With a neck lift, this skin is tightened and smoothed to restore a more contoured silhouette.

What is a Necklift?

It is common for the skin around the neck to lose its elasticity and begin to sag, creating “jowls” from the area just under the jawline down the neck. With a neck lift, this skin is tightened and smoothed to restore a more contoured silhouette.

Benefits

People with loose skin around their necks consider neck lifts to reduce or eliminate a double chin and because they offer the following benefits:

  • Restored jawline definition
  • Scars hidden behind the ears
  • Less downtime and recovery
  • Less invasive than facelift

What To Expect After

After your neck lift, you may go home once the anesthesia has begun to wear off. You must wear the pressure bandage applied to the neck region for the first few days following your surgery until it is removed at your post-op visit. There is usually some swelling and bruising. If needed, pain medication is available for any discomfort. You should plan on taking a week off work and activities to rest and allow the healing to progress. For a few weeks following surgery, you should not participate in any strenuous activities including heavy lifting and exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR A NECKLIFT?

A: Neck lifts are performed on anyone who has excess skin around the neck creating a “turkey neck” appearance and who wants a sharper angle from the jawline to the neck. It is very common to perform a neck lift when a traditional facelift is simply not warranted. Good candidates also have good skin tone but may have extra fat that gives the impression of being overweight even when that person is in good physical shape.

Q: HOW DO I PREPARE FOR A NECKLIFT?

A: As with any surgery, we provide you with detailed pre-op instructions to follow so that you are ready for your surgery. Some of the things we ask is that you stop smoking a few weeks prior to and after surgery to help with recovery; avoid taking any medications or vitamin supplements that thin the blood; arrange for transportation to and from the procedure; and be sure you are prepared for a few days of rest following your neck lift.

Q: WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE APPOINTMENT?

A: A neck lift procedure may slightly vary depending on the extent of the procedure, but there is a general process. It is typically done on an outpatient basis under local sedation unless it is combined with other procedures. Once the neck lift starts, small incisions are made under the chin along with under the ear for more extensive treatments. At that point, neck muscles under the skin are tightened, and, using liposuction, fatty deposits are removed. Once the procedure is complete, the skin around the neck is lifted and pulled tight. The incisions are then closed, and any excess skin is removed. The incisions are dressed, and bandages are applied to support and protect the neck.

Q: HOW LONG DOES A NECKLIFT PROCEDURE TAKE?

A: A neck lift takes between one to three hours based on how extensive the procedure is and whether other procedures are done in conjunction with the neck lift.

Q: WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS?

A: You can expect to see some changes within the first couple of weeks following the surgery as the swelling and bruising subside. The final results of your surgery take time and are more noticeable to you within a couple of months. Please note that the result from a neck lift should be subtle so that you look rejuvenated without looking like you’ve had plastic surgery.

Q: WHAT IS THE COST OF A NECKLIFT?

A: The cost of a neck lift varies with each patient depending on several factors, including whether other procedures are being performed in conjunction with the neck lift and the extent of the surgery to achieve the desired look. During your consultation, we can discuss the costs with you along with our payment and financing options. We accept cash, checks, and major credit cards along with offering financing through CareCredit®.

Q: WILL I HAVE SCARS AFTER?

A: Since the incision is usually made just under the chin in the crease between the chin and the neck, it is not noticeable and typically disappears once the incision has fully healed.
